Defence Systems of the British Isles

The fortification and defence structures of the British Isles have a tragic beauty to them; they have been altered over time by war, nature and humans, but still talk of borders, conflict and national identity.

The buildings here seem apart from history, from another epoch. A non-digital time of objects, ceremony and worship. The violence and nationalism they represent seems to now have an almost mystical truth to them.

These elements combine to form a language that transcends history, a language both progressive yet fairy-tale. A wild and hidden language there deep in the modern British landscape.

The Defence systems of the british Isles is a large format landscape project that Tobias has been working on for 3 yrs and is ongoing.
